Britain is home to some of the world’s most picturesque horse racing venues, and several are located alongside major rivers. These rivers not only provide stunning scenery but have also played an important role in the history and development of the racecourses. Here are four famous British racecourses that sit adjacent to major rivers.
1. Chester Racecourse – River Dee
Chester Racecourse, officially known as the Roodee, is one of the oldest operational racecourses in the world. It sits alongside the River Dee, with the river forming a beautiful backdrop to race meetings. The riverside location enhances the atmosphere, making Chester one of Britain’s most scenic racecourses.
2. Perth Racecourse – River Tay
Located in Scotland, Perth Racecourse lies close to the River Tay, Scotland’s longest river. The surrounding countryside and nearby water create an attractive setting for National Hunt racing, drawing visitors from across the UK.
