Valtteri Bottas: Career Profile

Overview

Valtteri Bottas is a Finnish racing driver born on 28 August 1989 in Nastola, Finland. Widely regarded as one of the most consistent drivers of the modern Formula One era, Bottas built a reputation for speed, technical feedback, and qualifying performance during his time with Williams, Mercedes, and Sauber.

Early Career

Bottas progressed through karting before moving into single-seater racing. He won the Formula Renault Eurocup and Formula Renault Northern European Cup championships in 2008, establishing himself as one of Finland’s most promising young talents.

Formula One Debut

Bottas made his Formula One debut with Williams Racing in 2013. His breakthrough season came in 2014 when he secured six podium finishes and helped Williams return to the front of the grid. Over four seasons with Williams, he became known for his smooth driving style and strong racecraft.

Mercedes Years (2017–2021)

Following the retirement of Nico Rosberg, Bottas joined Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team for the 2017 season alongside Lewis Hamilton.

During five seasons with Mercedes, Bottas:

  • Won 10 Formula One Grands Prix
  • Secured 20 pole positions
  • Finished runner-up in the Drivers’ Championship in 2019 and 2020
  • Contributed to five consecutive Constructors’ Championships for Mercedes

All 10 of his Formula One victories came during his Mercedes tenure.

However, as the team transitioned toward the future Audi project, results became more difficult to achieve, culminating in a scoreless 2024 campaign.

Mercedes Reserve Role

After leaving Sauber at the end of 2024, Bottas returned to Mercedes as a reserve driver for the 2025 Formula One season. The move allowed him to remain active within Formula One while pursuing opportunities for a future race seat.
