Overview

Founded in 1969, the San Diego Padres joined Major League Baseball during the league’s expansion of that season. The franchise represents San Diego, California, and competes in the National League West Division. Since 2004, the Padres have played their home games at Petco Park in downtown San Diego, having previously played at San Diego Stadium, later known as Jack Murphy Stadium and Qualcomm Stadium.

History

The Padres began play in 1969 as one of four MLB expansion teams. After several difficult early seasons, the franchise enjoyed its first sustained success under manager Dick Williams, winning the National League pennant in 1984 before losing the World Series to the Detroit Tigers.

The club returned to the postseason during the mid-1990s and captured a second National League pennant in 1998 under manager Bruce Bochy, advancing to the World Series before being defeated by the New York Yankees.

The Padres won consecutive National League West division titles in 2005 and 2006. Following several rebuilding seasons, the franchise returned to the postseason during the shortened 2020 season and again in 2022, when it advanced to the National League Championship Series after defeating the New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers before falling to the Philadelphia Phillies.

In recent years, the organisation has built around players including Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr., remaining a regular contender for postseason qualification.
