Famous Jockeys Series Of 48 No. 21 R. Dick In The Colours Of Lord Astor

Famous Jockeys Series Of 48 No. 21 R. Dick In The Colours Of Lord Astor

Robert Dick was brilliantly conspicuous in the saddle during the 1933 season.

At the Ascot meeting he won three big races on consecutive days for Lord Astor – the St. James’s Palace Stakes, Coronation Stakes, and the Waterford Stakes, worth, in all, £10,030.

He also won on The Divot and dead-heated on Mannamead at the same meeting. In the same month he won the Newbury Summer Cup on Crême Brulée.

Born in Cowdenbeath, Scotland, in 1908, Dick, after completing a successful apprenticeship in Stanley Wootton’s Epsom Stable, rode for W. Nightingall’s establishment.

Later he was given a retainer by Lord Astor, for whom he has ridden many important winners.

Famous Jockeys Series Of 48 No. 1 J. Dines In The Colours Of Mr. Adam Boazman

Famous Jockeys Series Of 48 No. 1 J. Dines In The Colours Of Mr. Adam Boazman

Johnny Dines Rode Jean’s Dream to victory in the Manchester November Handicap of 1933, in Mr. A. Boazman’s colours. He was apprenticed to the Irish trainer, J. Musker, and rode over 500 winners during five seasons in Ireland before coming to England and joining J. Killalee’s stable at Epsom. Dines gave a perfect exhibition of horsemanship when he won the 1927 Cesarewitch on Eagle’s Pride, and later, in the 1929 Cambridgeshire, when successful on Double Life. In 1934 he won the Lincolnshire Handicap on Play On, and the Liverpool Cup on Gay Dancer.

Famous Jockeys Series of 48 No. 22 G. Richards In The Colours Of Mr J. A. Dewar

Gordon Richards, on whose services Fred Darling’s have first call, rode Mr. J.A. Dewar’s Sansonnet to victory on three occasions during 1935. “Moppy” Richards, as he is known, rode his first winner at Leicester, on Gay Lord, March 31st 1921, and since becoming champion jockey in 1925, he has held this distinction for nine seasons out of eleven. Possibly the greatest feat in racing was put up by Gordon when, after riding a winner in the last race at Nottingham overnight, he continued with eleven consecutive wins at Chepstow, October 4-5th, 1933, setting up a world’s record. During that season he rode 259 winners, beating Fred Archer’s 1885 record of 246.
